Ukraine has built up a formidable arsenal of drones capable of attacking Russian forces everywhere. But these systems are no alternative to the other weapons Kyiv needs, President Zelenskyy said Tuesday. Ukraine needs air defenses, missiles, and artillery, he told Axel Springer media outlets. That said, Kyiv's drone program does not make up for the weapons that the country really needs but doesn't have in its arsenal. Advertisement"If we don't have air-defense systems and the appropriate long-range weapons to match Putin, he will destroy our country," Zelenskyy said Tuesday.

Xabi Alonso was appointed the club’s head coach in October 2022, with Leverkusen languishing near the bottom of the German table. Prior to being appointed Leverkusen’s manager, Alonso had coached Real Madrid’s Under-14 team and Real Sociedad’s B team. We have seen in the past what else can happen,” Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tag told Dazn after the victory over Köln. There are 10 games remaining in the Bundesliga season and Leverkusen is the strong favorite to win its first ever league title. And with Leverkusen in semifinals of the domestic cup and the round-of-16 stage of the Europa League, Alonso could cap off a memorable second season in first-team management with a hat-trick of trophies.

REUTERS/Ina Fassbender/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Dec 1 (Reuters) - The broad-based downturn in euro zone manufacturing activity eased slightly last month but the sector remained deeply rooted in contractionary territory, prompting factories to trim staffing levels for a sixth straight month. HCOB's final euro zone manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI), compiled by S&P Global, rose to 44.2 in November from October's 43.1, above a preliminary estimate of 43.8. An index measuring output, which feeds into a composite PMI due on Tuesday and seen as a good gauge of economic health, climbed to 44.6 from 43.1. "November has not been the prettiest, and this does not refer only to the weather but also to the situation in the manufacturing sector of the euro zone," said Cyrus de la Rubia, chief economist at Hamburg Commercial Bank. The employment index dropped to a low not seen since August 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic was cementing its grip on the world.

Ina Fassbender | AFP | Getty ImagesRenewable energy firms are mostly suffering a dire earnings season as struggling supply chains, manufacturing faults and rising production costs eat into profits. Manufacturing faults, most notably at Siemens Energy 's wind turbine subsidiary Siemens Gamesa, have emerged as companies race to build turbines at a greater pace and scale. Specialist wind energy firms are also often finding themselves outbid for seabed licenses by traditional oil and gas players. As a result, most wind energy stocks are down sharply since the turn of the year. The firm's economists said the past earnings season was a "learning moment" for the industry.

Levels of planet-heating pollution from fossil fuel electricity generation may have already peaked, the report found. Ina Fassbender/AFP/Getty ImagesEmber analyzed data from 78 countries representing 93% of global demand for electricity, for the fourth edition of its annual Global Electricity Review. Nearly 40% of global electricity is now powered by renewables and nuclear energy, marking a new record high, according to the report. Wind and solar made up 12% of global energy generation in 2022, up from 10% the previous year. Coal power remained the single largest source of electricity across the globe, accounting for 36% of global electricity production in 2022.
The analysis published Wednesday by independent climate think tank Ember found that 12% of the world's power came from solar and wind in 2022, up from 10% of global electricity generation in 2021. Wiatros-Motyka added, "A new era of falling fossil emissions means the coal power phasedown will happen, and the end of gas power growth is now within sight." It shows that more than 60 countries now generate over 10% of their electricity from wind and solar. Renewables and nuclear sources were collectively found to have accounted for 39% of global electricity generation in 2022 — in a new record high. Coal, the world's dirtiest fossil fuel, was found to be the single largest source of electricity worldwide last year, producing 36% of global power in 2022.
In France, the bloc's second-biggest economy, factory activity returned to growth albeit not as strongly as initially forecast. In Asia, factory activity contracted in January as the boost from China's COVID reopening had yet to take full effect. China's factory activity shrank more slowly in January after Beijing lifted tough COVID curbs late last year, a private sector survey showed. China's Caixin/S&P Global manufacturing (PMI) nudged up to 49.2 in January from 49.0 in December, staying below the 50 mark for a sixth straight month. Factory activity expanded in January in Indonesia and the Philippines but shrank in Malaysia and Taiwan, PMI surveys showed.
Climate activists pledged Sunday to defend a tiny village in western Germany from being bulldozed for the expansion of a nearby coal mine that has become a battleground between the government and environmental campaigners. A climate activist protests in the village of Luetzerath, Germany on Jan. 8, 2023. But environmental groups have blasted the agreement, saying it will still result in hundreds of millions of tons of coal being extracted and burned. They argue that this would release vast amounts of greenhouse gas and make it impossible for Germany to meet its commitments under the 2015 Paris climate accord. “(We) will fight for every tree, for every house, for every meter in this village,” said Luka Scott, a spokesperson for the alliance of groups organizing protests.
London CNN —Natural gas prices in Europe and the United States have tumbled to levels last seen before Russia sparked a global energy crisis by invading Ukraine. Even so, European gas prices are still historically high, and could rise again this year if demand from China picks up or supplies are disrupted. Wholesale prices were already shooting up in the months before the war as economies reopened from pandemic lockdowns. “It will take a bit [of time] for the fall in the wholesale prices of natural gas to [feed into] into the retail prices,” he said. That will keep Europe at a competitive disadvantage to the United States, where gas prices are about five times lower.
